Why do I need to use RECs?

Renewable energy is widely recognised as a critical element in companies’ sustainability efforts. While various avenues exist for procuring renewable energy, including on-site generation, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), and green power products or tariffs, these options may not always be accessible in certain markets.

In such cases, RECs offer an effective solution. By acquiring RECs, companies can achieve their renewable energy goals while actively supporting the transition to cleaner grids where these certificates are purchased.

What are RECs?

RECs are a type of tradable Energy Attribute Certificate (EAC). One REC represents the environmental attributes of the generation of a one megawatt hour of energy produced by renewable sources.

These certificates are used to prove that your power has been generated from renewable sources.

How do RECs work?

RECs work by unbundling the environmental attributes of renewable energy from the physical electricity. When renewable energy is generated and added to the grid, RECs are created.

These certificates can then be bought and sold separately from the actual electricity, allowing individuals or organisations to claim the environmental benefits of renewable energy without physically consuming the electricity itself.

frequently asked questions_

RE100 is a global initiative in which companies commit to sourcing 100% of their electricity consumption from renewable sources.

RECs play a crucial role as they are considered procured renewable energy and can contribute towards these targets, subject to specific RE100 guidelines.

The prices of RECs can vary depending on various factors such as regional market conditions, supply and demand dynamics, regulatory policies, and the type of renewable energy source.

The validity period of RECs varies based on market regulations and guidelines. Generally, it aligns with the compliance/reporting period of relevant renewable energy standards. RECs, representing environmental attributes, are typically redeemed in the same reporting year as the electricity consumed during that period.

  • Country: Consider the regulations and standards regarding REC market boundaries in the countries where you operate. For example, in Singapore, CDP and RE100 guidelines require Singapore RECs for claims within the country, while SS673 allows sourcing from ASEAN members.

  • Price: Take into account the pricing of RECs, which generally varies based on country, vintage and technology.

  • Vintage: Check the vintage of RECs, which refers to the year they were produced. Different jurisdictions have specific rules on acceptable vintage dates.

  • Technology: Consider the different technologies used to generate RECs, such as solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass. Some buyers may have preferences for certain technologies based on marketing and brand value.

By considering these factors, you can make informed decisions that align with your operational and sustainability needs.

To ensure the authenticity and quality of RECs, companies should engage with reputable and trusted providers. It's essential to verify that the RECs are sourced from reliable renewable energy projects and comply with recognized certification standards.
